Professional facial treatments given at beauty salons are great for clearing up your skin. However, between professional treatments you can maintain your skin with an at-home facial that consists of a few simple steps.

If you give yourself an at-home facial once a week, professional treatments will only be needed infrequently, saving you a bundle.

Here are the steps that go into an at-home facial (do once a week):

- Step 1 -

Cleanse your face to remove dirt and makeup. Use the same cleanser you do in your daily skin care regimen.

- Step 2 -

Use an alcohol-free toner, again as you do in your daily regimen.

- Step 3 -

Use a facial scrub to exfoliate and buff your skin.

Even though you can buy a facial scrub containing tiny synthetic beads, I found that ordinary kitchen sugar works great for this purpose. Gently rub it on your face and rinse off.

If you have sensitive skin, skip this step.

- Step 4 -

Fill a bowl with warm water and add a few drops of an essential oil (serum).

Now dip a washcloth in the water and press to your face for 10 seconds. Repeat 5-8 times until your skin feels moist and soft.

- Step 5 -

Apply a facial mask, keeping the eye area clear, leave it on for 15 minutes (or as indicated in the instructions) and then rinse off with warm water.

If you have oily skin, use a clay mask, and if you have dry, normal or sensitive skin, use a hydrating mask.

For combination skin, apply the clay mask to the oily parts of your face and the hydrating mask elsewhere.

Recommended masks:
Aroma Cleanse Clay and Herbal Cleansing Mask by Decleor – for dry to normal skin
Hydrating Gel Mask by Murad – for oily skin

- Step 6 -

Apply eye cream and then your moisturizer, avoiding one that contains exfoliating ingredients such as retinols or alpha-hydroxy acids. And you’re done.

The “Mini Facial”:

If you’re in a hurry, just complete 1, 2, 5, and 6, i.e. cleanse, tone, put a mask on, and moisturize.
